I never imagined my life would end up like this. One day I had a family, a home, and a future I believed in. Then the divorce happened, and it felt like everything I had built disappeared overnight. My kids were no longer with me, and seeing them became something I had to hope for instead of something I could count on. Losing them hurt more than losing anything else. The financial side crushed me too. By the time everything was over, I had almost nothing left. I couldn't afford to keep my place, so at 35 I moved back into my parents' house. Every morning I wake up feeling like I've gone backwards instead of forwards. The hardest part isn't even living there. It's having to ask my parents for gas money just so I can drive to job interviews or see my kids. Every time I ask, I feel embarrassed and ashamed. I keep telling myself things will get better, but some days it's hard to believe that. I miss the life I had, and more than anything, I just miss being there for my kids.
